Editorial Reviews. From Publishers Weekly. A publicist (and author of The Complete Guide to Book Publicity) who has promoted several bestsellers, Blanco was. Do you think the spin the bottle episode when she was in 6th grade was normal 6th grade behavior? 4. Did Jodee do the right thing in phoning her parents or. In her poignant work, Jodee Blanco tells how school became a frightening and painful place, where threats, humiliation, and assault were as much a part of her .

She carefully treads the line separating activism and vicitmization. Her heartbreaking story validates the feelings of all those who were victims of abuse as children, while at the same time endorsing forgiveness and understanding toward the abusers.

She demonizes no one, humanizes everyone. One who reads Please Stop Laughing at Me cannot help but feel compassion for those involved, the victims and the abusers.

A must read for all high school students and especially for adults recovering from childhood abuse. Two groups of people should be reading this book. The first group is people that work with children and teens. The second group is teenagers. If you've ever been an outcast, you can totally relate to this young woman's story.

If you've been on the "fringes" of popularity, trying desperately to fit in, you'll recognize some of the people in this book. The book is an easy, yet painful read. It isn't really a deep book; it doesn't analyze or find any solutions, which bothered me at first. But then I realized, Jodee isn't trying to find a solution to bullying, she's just making us more aware of what happens.

She's educating us, through this story, and that could lead to solutions. I feel Jodee is very brave, for putting this story in print. I'd like to see a follow-up to her story, a "what happened after it was published" sort of book.

It really showed her experience of horrible high school bullying. Her story was so impactful for me that I cried so many times. She is an amazing author. I was immersed and fascinated by Jodee's story. I did not realize how deeply peer bullying could reach into adult lives, even after great personal success. One person found this helpful. This book wasn't the greatest book ever written, but I think it gave a vivid look in the eyes of a child that was tortured by her classmates.

You always think that the kids that get teased are the really ugly kids that look different not being mean here but in real life, any child can be a target. I was teased a little bit as a child, but nothing like this. My heart goes out to Jodee and I'm happy to read that she is doing so well. The last chapter about the reunion really shows just how insecure most people can be.

A lot of bully don't realize what they are doing and how much it can affect the victims life. I really wish they had more anti bully programs in schools. I have heard that they really help, and if they can help one less child from living like Jodee, then they are worth it.

Dave Pelzer. This One Summer. Mariko Tamaki. So she couldn't keep her mouth shut about it, so what? I guarantee you it wasn't her choice to be the sort of person who felt like her head would explode if she kept quiet.

She writes a whole hell of a lot about how much she'd have liked to keep quiet and go along with the crowd, and how much easier her life would have been if she could.

Ultimately, she found the guilt of not speaking up harder to bear than the knowledge that she'd be bullied for speaking out.

Whether she really felt impelled to speak out in the same way that I do which, I reemphasize, is a pain-in-the-ass trait that I'd moderate in a second if I could! Her classmates were the ones being assholes. Anyone want to explain to me why they're being defended to the skies above in various reviews here?

And to address the points I'd normally address in such a review: the writing is competent but not brilliant.

See a Problem?

I don't agree with people who say the story sounds like an adult imposing her own viewpoint on a kid rather than channeling an authentic teenage voice; I think her weird blend of precocity and immaturity rings true for an intelligent adolescent, and her struggle to find her own identity is clear throughout the book and also feels age-appropriate. I never thought I'd say this, but I sort of wish this had been published in a post-James Frey era, because memoirs are now rigorously fact-checked and this is the sort of memoir that hangs all its weight on the reality of the events described, rather than on the strength of the writing or the conveyance of a wider emotional truth.

I guess my point is that that "goody-goody" trait is in fact what got her in trouble time and time again, because yes, she berated her classmates more than once for being cruel, since cruelty is endemic in high schools. And so she became a target.

You all know that harassing disabled kids is wrong, and I hope you can see how a sheltered twelve-year-old could be horrified by drug use and casual sex among her peers.

So she couldn't keep her mouth shut about it, so what? I guarantee you it wasn't her choice to be the sort of person who felt like her head would explode if she kept quiet.

Great for beginners and older ones; helps your back and keeps you limber. After Blanco transferred to another school, she continued a pattern of reporting bad behavior to authority figures and became a true outsider. She demonizes no one, humanizes everyone. If you've ever been an outcast, you can totally relate to this young woman's story. Enabled Word Wise: She was told kids will be kids and that there was something wrong with her.
